What to look at before buying a compact seat

Decide which problem you are solving first. Three different things share this section and get confused constantly: seats that store things inside, seats that disappear when nobody is using them, and seats that convert into a bed. They are not interchangeable, and buying the wrong kind is the commonest mistake here.

If the problem is people staying the night, you want a convertible, and you want to ask one question before anything else: what size does it make as a bed? Makers are strangely quiet about it. The one in this section says "single" and stops, so we have recorded what it measures as a chair and left the bed figure empty rather than assume. There are two families: foam with no frame, light and ready to use but sitting on the floor, and ones with a metal frame and legs, which sit at normal height and weigh twice as much.

If the problem is people coming to dinner, you want chairs that fold. The thing to check is not how they sit, it is how thin they go and where they will live the other 360 days. Five centimetres slides behind a door; fifteen ends up leaning against a wall in the living room, which is what you were trying to avoid.

And if what you have too much of is clutter, a bench or an ottoman with storage does two jobs on the same square metre. Watch the material and watch the load: a reinforced board chest takes an adult sitting on it, a folding fabric box does not, and the makers of the cheap ones often publish no load figure at all. When that number is missing, it is telling you something.
